IPv6 Stateless Addressing Explained: SLAAC, the A-bit, and the O-bit @networkupskill

In IPv4, if a client needed an address, it simply broadcasted a request. In IPv6, the process is far more nuanced. Clients have multiple ways to get online, but they don't decide on their own—they take direction from the local router via specific flags in Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP) Router Advertisements.

In this video, we explore the "hybrid" approach to IPv6 addressing: SLAAC (Stateless Address Autoconfiguration) combined with Stateless DHCPv6. You'll learn how to configure a Cisco router to act as a traffic cop, using the A-bit and O-bit to tell hosts: "Build your own address, but ask the server for your DNS settings."

KEY TOPICS COVERED:
• The SLAAC Revolution: How hosts create their own routable IPv6 addresses without a server.
• The A-Bit (Autonomous): Directing clients to use SLAAC on a per-subnet basis.
• The O-Bit (Other): Signaling hosts to use Stateless DHCPv6 for "other" information (like DNS).
• The Relay Agent: Configuring ipv6 dhcp relay destination to ensure stateless requests reach the server.
