When you are opening your investment account the first thing you will need to do is to select where you want your account to be. All the major financial institutions all have a brokerage arm, so what you can do is to check with your bank to see if they offer brokerage services. You will need to have an account with these brokers because if you want to buy stock on the Jamaica stock exchange you cannot just go down to their office and put in your order.
Next you will need to know what is required to open the account. If you already have an account, then you may not need to provide as much information when opening the new account. If you do not, then you will have to provide more information. Normally the first two pieces of documents that you need are your proof of address and a government issued id. Speak with your possible broker to see exactly what you need to open your account as they all may have different requirements.
When I was opening my equity trading account, I still needed to fill out the forms even though I already had an account with the broker. So be prepared to fill out some forms especially if you do not have an account yet. For joint accounts, you may need to have the joint holder present along with all information that you are submitting for yourself. If you are opening the account with someone that is underage you will need to get a TRN for that person.
After filling out all the different forms and so on the next thing I did was to put money in my account. This can be done several ways, but you will need to know if your broker is a deposit taking institution as not all brokers can collect actual cash. So, discuss with them how to fund your account based on the available options.
Now that you have filled out the application form provided all the necessary information and put money on your account, I know you are ready to start investing. Ok so we may not be quite ready to start buying just yet. To buy stocks you need what is called a JCSD account number. JCSD stands for the Jamaica Central Securities Depository, they are a subsidiary of the Jamaica Stock exchange. Their role is to transfer ownership of the stocks that are traded on the stock market. What this means is If you do not buy stock in an IPO or APO directly from the company then more than likely you are buying from another investor like myself. JCSD will transfer the stocks that I sold from me to the new owner or owners. So only after getting your JCSD number will you be able to start buying and selling stocks.
Finally, we now have our JCSD number and our account is funded time to buy some stocks but how do you set up the purchase? Depending on the broker that you choose you may be able to do this all electronically. Personally, I use the jtrader platform that is offered directly from the stock exchange. I know some of the larger brokers also have their very own platform and as a result they do not use Jtrader. They have their very own proprietary platform to do the same thing so you will have options. You can also get a dedicated portfolio advisor that you communicate with to execute all the trades that you want but it may come at an additional cost so be sure to find out. At the end of the day you can decide for full control with the online account or use your advisor to do trades it is all up to you.
As I said in my last video the only good time to start investing is now and with new technology added every day it is getting easier and easier to invest. Competition is also increasing between the brokers so trading cost are getting lower and lower so always shop around to ensure you are getting the best price.
