As a loose intuitive watercolor painter, I try to invite my instincts and free-flowing approach into all parts of my painting practice, and that includes testing and reviewing new watercolor products. Today I'm trying out a new set of watercolor paint, the Lake Colors set from A. Gallo, an Italian watercolor brand.
These Gallo pigments are honey based, and they are new to me, however I can't definitely review the brand itself because I didn't realize when I bought "lake pigments" that I was buying a line of plant-derived colors, rather than the pigment derived paints that make up the bulk of their line. Whenever you see the description "lake" in a paint colour, it usually indicates that it's made from a plant or dye rather than a pigment. And generally that means you're getting less saturation, and possibly less lightfast/more prone to fading.
This does mean that I get to talk about what happens when you are disappointed by a review, and offer some strategies for making the best of that situation.
