After years of studying tire pressure, rolling resistance, aerodynamics, vibration losses, rim width, sealant, valves, rim tape, and TPU tubes, SILCA reached one remaining part of the complete tire system: the tire.
In this launch video, Josh Poertner explains why SILCA decided to develop its own road and gravel race tires, what we learned during more than two years of development and testing, and some of the engineering decisions behind the new PROTOCOL tire family.
PROTOCOL was developed around modern racing conditions, wider rims, higher-volume tires, and lower tire pressures. Rather than chasing a single performance metric, the goal was to balance the complete performance equation: rolling efficiency, grip, ride quality, puncture resistance, aerodynamics, durability, tire pressure optimization, and modern tire system compatibility.
Josh digs into PROTOCOL tire technology including optimized casing ply angle, inverse proportional design, true-to-measure tire sizing, CarbonBead BeadLock carbon fiber bead technology, Pulsar Compound, tubeless fitment, and why different race conditions require different tire solutions.
The PROTOCOL family includes the RCR road and all-road race tire plus three purpose-built gravel tread patterns: RCG-1 for fast gravel, RCG-3 for mixed terrain, and RCG-4 for loose gravel and technical terrain.
This is the story of why SILCA made tires, what we learned along the way, and the thinking behind PROTOCOL.
