Whenever you plant potatoes you have a lot of soil exposed for a long time until the potatoes can shade out the soil surface. I am trying to interplant fava beans as a cover crop with potatoes to help shade the soil, feed the soil, generate biomass, and fix nitrogen. If you get the time right and couple this with a surface mulch like straw, then maybe you can make potatoes a little more soil friendly.
