Venice — the "Serenissima" — was once the beating heart of Mediterranean trade, a city of grandeur, wealth, and cultural fusion. But few know that in 1516, it also became home to something entirely new in European history: the world’s first “ghetto.”
For centuries, Venetian merchants traded with Jews, but never allowed them to settle permanently. That changed when the city’s rulers, led by the Doge, granted Jews the right to live within the city — but confined them to a former industrial island once used as a copper foundry. This island would become the Venetian Ghetto.
From all corners of the Diaspora they came: Ashkenazi Jews from Germany, Sephardic Jews fleeing the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal, Italian Jews, Provençal Jews from southern France, and even those arriving from the Ottoman Empire. Despite confinement and discrimination, this diverse community flourished — building five synagogues, each reflecting its own cultural identity.
More than just a place of exile, the Venetian Ghetto became a crossroads of Jewish thought, art, commerce, and survival — leaving an indelible mark on the city's history.
