Artist Sam McKinniss invited filmmakers SandenWolff and ICA Miami to visit him in his Kent, CT studio. The short video that results provides a look into the artist’s process culling inspiration from popular culture, the entertainment industry, sports, and the internet.
McKinniss discusses his recent execution of landscape paintings, highlighting how these works provide a unique space for his “disparate characters” to exist. The artist contemplates the difference between viewing conventional landscape art and the dynamics involved in navigating the media landscape, characterized in abundance by drama and spectacle.
McKinniss’s work “Dolly Parton with kitten” (2021), an evocative portrait of the singer and icon in black and white, is part of ICA Miami’s collection.
Sam McKinniss (b.1985, Northfield, Minnesota) lives and works in New York, NY and Kent, CT. McKinniss’s paintings have recently been on view at ‘Misery’, his first solo exhibition in France, at Almine Rech, Paris, and JTT, New York. Beyond ICA Miami, his work is in collections including the New Britain Museum of American Art, CT; Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT; and Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, MA; among others.
