Founded in 1909 as a TB sanatorium, this ginormous complex now lays abandoned, graffitied and in total disrepair. Unfortunately, there remains no artefacts. Like most of these asylums, tunnels link the buildings, used for transporting the people keeping them hidden from the outside world.
By 1912 it held 12 patients which increased to around 140 by 1922. It later became the “School of the Feeble Minded”, and was home to over 1,300 patients with only 400 employees.
The complex was so large, it had its own zip code.
The state couldn’t cover the costs to provide the adequate care needed for the inhabitants. In 1992, San Haven closed for good, leaving only the spirits of its past to walk the forbidding hallways.
