On a cold day in October 1793, revolutionaries gathered inside the ancient Basilica of Saint-Denis, just north of Paris. For almost a thousand years, this great church had served as the burial place of the kings and queens of France. Magnificent marble tombs filled the vast interior, each one representing centuries of royal power. But France had changed forever. The monarchy had fallen, King Louis XVI had been executed earlier that year, and the revolutionaries were determined to erase every symbol of the old regime. One by one, they smashed royal monuments, broke open stone tombs, and pried open heavy lead coffins. Among them was the coffin of one of history's most famous monarchs, King Louis XIV. When his coffin was finally opened after almost eighty years, those present were astonished. Instead of finding only a skeleton, they discovered a remarkably well-preserved royal body that still retained many recognisable features. It was one of the most extraordinary discoveries made during the destruction of the French royal tombs.
