Edward I was one of England's greatest medieval kings. During his long reign, he conquered Wales, fought countless campaigns against Scotland, reformed English law, and earned a fearsome reputation as a military commander. Known to history as "Longshanks" because of his exceptional height, Edward ruled England for thirty-five years before dying in 1307. Yet while his life has been studied for centuries, the story of what happened to his body after death is just as fascinating. Unlike many medieval rulers whose remains have vanished or deteriorated beyond recognition, Edward I's corpse survived in remarkable condition. When his coffin was opened almost five centuries later, those who looked inside were astonished by what they found.
