POLITICO | Inside DNC's content creator takeover @POLITICO | Uploaded August 2024 | Updated October 2024, 8 hours ago.
Political activism is just one part of public relations specialist and content creator Kory Aversa’s overall brand. As @PhillyPublicist, he usually talks about pop-up events in his hometown of Philadelphia, posts clips from concerts, provides restaurant recommendations and shares highlights from gay pride celebrations with his nearly 100,000 followers on Instagram and 130,000 on TikTok.
However, in the past five days, Aversa has been feeding his followers content from the Democratic National Convention (DNC) — he has posted 12 times on Instagram and 18 times on TikTok live from the convention floor and behind the scenes with big names in the Democratic party. A spontaneous interaction with Alexandra Ocasio Cortez, captioned “AOC casually stopping by the DNC creators to say helllo” racked up nearly 350,000 views.
Aversa is one of 200 creators invited by the DNC to create digital content about the event for their followings. The plan to issue them credentials was in the works when President Joe Biden was the nominee. This translated into access parallel to legacy media, including VIP interviews, access to democratic surrogates and a designated studio space for content creation. The party's outreach to these online influencers is evidence that the internet craves organic content over pre-packaged messaging.
