Passive refrigeration is a way to lower the electrical demands, using the cold temperatures during the winter in Alaska.

In this video, Robbin Garber-Slaght, research engineer at CCHRC, and Gregg Free, HVAC/refrigeration mechanic, explain how thermosyphon works to passively keep the temperatures inside refrigerator and freezer cold. During their studies, the prototype fridge used 16% less electricity over the course of the year than a high efficiency Energy Star fridge.
