Initial D (頭文字D) is a Japanese street racing manga by Shuichi Shigeno written from 1995 to 2013. It was adapted into an anime series, several movies, and an arcade game series. This video is from Initial: D Arcade Stage 8: Infinity.
The story focuses on the world of illegal Japanese street racing, where all the action is concentrated in the mountain passes and rarely in cities or urban areas, with a particular emphasis on drifting. With editorial supervision provided by professional race car driver and drifting pioneer Keiichi Tsuchiya, the series attained additional legitimacy and became popular for it's depiction of Japanese touge drifting and car culture.
The story begins in Gunma prefecture and the Kantō region of Japan, starting with Mt. Akina, where Takumi Fujiwara is unknowingly trained by his street racer father, Bunta, to become a fast driver by delivering tofu to the resort hotels at the top of the mountain every day since middle school. Their family delivery vehicle is Bunta's old street racing car the Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT Apex, or "AE86." The daily training gives Takumi a perfect understanding of every turn on Mt. Akina, and an unbeatable driving technique, despite the fact that Takumi has always felt forced to drive and only drives fast to get the delivery over with.
The story heats up when the Ryosuke and Keisuke Takahashi of the Akagi Red Suns challenge the Akina Speed Stars to a downhill battle. Through several unplanned events, Takumi and his AE86 end up facing off against Keisuke's Mazda FD RX7 and Takumi's superior driving skill allows him to win, starting the "Legend of the Either-Six of Akina." This attracts more rivals from nearby mountains including the Myogi Night Kids, who come to challenge Takumi and his AE86. Sucked into the world of street racing, Takumi learns to love the throttle of competition and trying to be the fastest downhill driver.
This leads to Takumi accepting battles in other areas, including a races at Mt. Usui, Mt. Myogi, Shomaru, and Irohazaka. Ultimately, Takumi joins Project.D, as the downhill ace, racing as a tag-team alongside Keisuke Takahashi who is the uphill ace. Project D was formed by the White Comet of Akagi, Ryosuke Takahashi to follow his dream, of finding talented local drivers and training them up to be world-class racers.
