Ingenuity is a small helicopter that is located on planet Mars since February 18, 2021. The mars helicopter will make the first powered atmospheric flight on mars. Part of NASA's Mars 2020 mission, the small coaxial, mars helicopter will serve as a technology demonstrator for the potential use of flying probes for Mars rovers.
Ingenuity is attached to the underside of Perseverance mars rover. Its deployment was originally planned for April 8, 2021,about 60 days after Perseverance's landing at the Octavia E. Butler Landing site in Jezero crater, but take off is now delayed to no sooner than April 11, 2021. After deployment, the mars rover is expected to drive approximately 100 m (330 ft) away from the mars helicopter drone to allow it a safe "buffer zone" in which it will attempt to fly.Ingenuity is expected to fly up to five times during its 30-day test campaign scheduled early in the rover's mission. Primarily technology demonstrations, each flight is planned to fly at altitudes ranging from 3 – 15 m (10 – above the ground. for up to 60 seconds each. Ingenuity, which can travel up to 50 m (160 ft) downrange and then back to the starting area,will use autonomous control during its short flights, which will be telerobotically planned and scripted by operators at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory .It will communicate directly with the Perseverance mars rover after each landing.
If Ingenuity works as expected, NASA could build on its design to extend the aerial component of future Mars missions.The project is led by MiMi Aung at the JPL. Other contributors include AeroVironment, Inc., the NASA Ames Research Center, and the NASA Langley Research Center
t has been 117 years since Orville Wright took flight in Flyer 1 for 12 seconds on a historic December day in 1903 at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. In the image captured by John Daniels, a member of the US Life-Saving Station at the site, Orville's brother Wilbur can be seen running alongside the aircraft. During the fourth and final flight that day, Wright achieved a nearly 60-second flight. This video doesn´t show the flight of the Ingenuity mars rover on mars, as it is delayed for april 12th. This video was created using cgi and is a visualization of how the flight of the helicopter on mars may look like.
