Metabolic Mind | Inaugural $1.5M Prize Awarded to Mitochondrial Psychobiology Pioneer, Martin Picard, PhD @metabolicmind | Uploaded March 2024 | Updated October 2024, 42 minutes ago.
Dr. Martin Picard, Associate Professor of Behavioral Medicine in Psychiatry and Neurology and director of the Mitochondrial Psychobiology Group at Columbia’s Irving Medical Center, received the Baszucki Prize in Science, a $1.5 million prize for his groundbreaking work establishing the new field of mitochondrial psychobiology.

In this interview with Dr. Bret Scher, he discusses his work exploring energy transformation and the age-old mystery of the perceived duality of body and mind. The field of mitochondrial psychobiology takes a fresh approach to investigating how biology and cognition are intertwined and modulated through mitochondria, shaping subjective human experience.

Dr. Picard expresses his gratitude for the Baszucki Prize in Science as it will open the door to creative exploration and innovation, allowing him and his research team to take risks and delve into challenging questions. His lab will explore signals in the blood through metabolomics and circulating proteins to gain insights into mitochondrial function. Gathering data and investigating psychobiological questions, such as how stress can alter energy metabolism, will inform our understanding of how mitochondria drive human experience and yield health and disease states.

Baszucki Group’s prize programs are designed to reward progress in science, medicine, and other disciplines. The newly established Baszucki Prize will periodically recognize an individual or team leveraging prior Baszucki Group funding to make exceptional contributions to their field. The new prize follows the 2022 Metabolic Mind Award for Clinicians, which honored seven pioneers for their work using ketogenic therapy to treat mental illness, and an inaugural research fellowship in Metabolic Psychiatry. Additional prize programs will be announced later this year.

About us:
Metabolic Mind is a non-profit initiative of Baszucki Group working to transform the study and treatment of mental disorders by exploring the connection between metabolism and brain health. We leverage the science of metabolic psychiatry and personal stories to offer education, community, and hope to people struggling with mental health challenges and those who care for them.

Our channel is for informational purposes only. We are not providing individual or group medical or healthcare advice nor establishing a provider-patient relationship. Many of the interventions we discuss can have dramatic or potentially dangerous effects if done without proper supervision.
