After several years of searching, a Catholic writer and teacher outside Milwaukee finally closed on a deal for a new house. About a month later, James Maldonado Berry’s 91-year-old grandmother suffered a major health scare and received a diagnosis of dementia. With an extra room in his new home, Berry invited his grandmother to live with him and his parents. In their new role as caregivers, they deal with frequent bouts of exhaustion but also see God’s love and His help. And the grandmother, who struggles to remember events of a few minutes ago, still recalls the lyrics of songs from decades earlier when she was a young adult in Puerto Rico. Berry says her joy also comes from knowing her family is nearby, and from looking out her window. “The window is a beautiful metaphor for her life now,” he says. “She loves waving at the people who walk by. Looking at the birds. Things are brought back to simplicity. Observing the birds, watching the breeze through the branches, these are things we can do instead of looking at our devices. … In this ministry you receive so much more than you give.”
