For some reason, if you jump at this specific invisible wall while the big snow pile is receding into the ground the game considers Mario OoB, as can be seen by Mario's hat suddenly disappearing. As an OoB protection the game instantly starts the bowser death screen animation, but for some reason Mario goes back in bounds a couple of frames later. This allows us to control Mario a little before he actually dies. An interesting thought would be: what if Mario collects a 100 coin star before going OoB and then back Inbounds?
