If and when I have apprentices, I think glazing will inevitably become a large part of what they do.
I can so easily spend days faffing over pots, tidying them up and preparing them for the kiln. It’s slow work, interesting at times but mostly it’s a bore, especially when there’s a board of 30 mugs to fettle clean, all that keeps me going is the audiobook blaring out in the workshop to help the hours go by quickly.
I’ve got much better and faster over the years. Initially, my glazing was relatively poor, resulting in dipped pots with pots of drips and marks left covering their surfaces where glaze had flowed over them. As time goes by you figure out methods of glazing that leave you with flush, even layers, yet there’s always a few sections that need some finessing, such as the tong marks, the rim and of course the base and this video shows approximately how I go about doing that, with brief encounters by Mog, who likes to sneak through the open windows in the studio and push up against my legs as I’m doing this, making me jump.
