Although our doors are currently closed Rebecca Jones, the great niece of Elva Blacker, discusses Blacker’s work as an artist and Women’s Auxiliary Air Force Aircraftswoman for our London exhibition ‘In Air and Fire: War Artists, the Battle of Britain and the Blitz’.
A mature student, at age 30 Blacker graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art in 1939, soon before Britain entered into war with Germany.
For years she had worked in her parents’ photographic firm which she was expected to run when her father died. Stationed at RAF Biggin Hill, which played a key role in the Battle of Britain, Blacker made many drawings of personnel; these constitute the most extensive artistic record life on an RAF station.
Interview by Curator Julia Beaumont-Jones.
