The first step of to improve your location portraits is to be comfortable with being out in the open and knowing you're going to face a whole range of challenges. Getting great location portraits is a combination of good lighting, the right camera settings and thinking about your backgrounds and Gavin Hoey is here to help make that easy.

Starting with lighting, Gavin shows how avoiding direct sunlight is a quick tip to make better portraits on location. Finding shade or creating your own is the first step, but camera settings will also make a difference. Gavin shows how a blur background effect can be achieved by correct use of aperture but also by thinking about focal length and subject to camera distance.

Of course, not all locations have the prefect background, so Gavin has two top tips to get you back on track. The first is to find a mini location within the location. Gavin recommends looking for a background that’s simple in style but still complimentary to your subject. Finally, there’s one background that’s always there and that’s the sky. As Gavin demonstrates, using the sky as your background is a skill that can really save the day on your next portrait session.

Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer, and trainer of all things photographic. Gavin has a real passion for sharing his photography and Photoshop knowledge. In 2008, he started recording and uploading video tutorials to YouTube. His work is regularly featured in photography magazines, websites, and videos.
