Adorama | Depth & Perspective with Overlapping Backgrounds | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey @Adorama | Uploaded April 2024 | Updated October 2024, 6 days ago.
You can quickly create a sense of depth in your images in several ways. Shadows are one of the most effective ways to do this. However, there’s also the use of perspective. Doubling up your background allows you to achieve both depth and perspective quickly.

Photographer Gavin Hoey shows how a background of a similar color and pattern can be used to create new looks. Starting with the classic fake corner, Gavin demonstrates that the best-looking corners are not 90 degrees.

Next, Gavin puts his handmade background in front of a similarly toned commercial background. By moving the position of the key light, Gavin creates and controls a drop shadow that gives an amazing sense of depth to his images.

Finally, Gavin rolls up the front background to create a double drop shadow and images that have a high-quality, fine art feel.

Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer, and trainer of all things photographic. Gavin has a real passion for sharing his photography and Photoshop knowledge. In 2008, he started recording and uploading video tutorials to YouTube. His work is regularly featured in photography magazines, websites, and videos.
