If you’ve ever seen a painting so textured you want to touch it, that’s impasto! 👆 🖼️

Meaning "dough" or "paste" in Italian, impasto is a technique that emerged in 16th century Venice. Artists like Titian and Tintoretto used thick paint to enhance the natural look of flesh, fabric, and metal in their paintings. Rembrandt later used the technique to capture dramatic light effects, and Van Gogh used it for expressive purposes.

With modern mediums such as acrylic extenders and modeling pastes, artists can now create lightweight, flexible layers that stay intact over time.
