The truth is that they can—and have. Artists’ paints are colored with pigments—finely ground powders extracted from natural resources or synthetically made. And pigments have disappeared for all sorts of reasons over the years.
When it happens these days, it’s usually because the only manufacturer who makes them stops production. In fact, it’s happening right now 🫣
Maybe you’ve heard about Alizarin Crimson being retired—as one of the last widely used artist pigments descended from ancient plant dyes, we’re all a little sad to see it go.
The good news? We’ve had replacements for years. Introduced to address concerns about lightfastness, Alizarin replacements look fantastic, with much better tinting power and permanence.
So bottom line? Even if your pigment of choice runs out—odds are there will be a great replacement in the ever evolving (and ever increasing) modern palette. 🎨
