Impact Assessment is a show that will help you better understand how technology impacts you and your community.
This isn’t a tech review show. It’s not a news shows. It’s not a “how-to” show either. This show is a deeper dive into the security and privacy issues that are created with the technology that we use everyday.
Instead of dealing with jargon and unnecessary complexity, we’re going to get right to the heart of the matter using everyday language and relatable examples.
My name is Mark and I’ll be your host for what I hope is a fascinating series exploring our digital world. Who am I to host this show? Great question and by asking it, I know that you’ll get a lot of out this series…or at least call me on any bull.
I’m a digital forensic scientist and researcher. I’ve got a bunch of letters behind my name that pretty much no one knows what they mean. The easiest way to think of my background is this: you know the nerd in the lab on your favourite crime or spy drama?
The one that they bring all of the smashed up devices to and expect that key piece of data in less than a minute? The one that looks like they barely ever leave work? That’s me. Though hopefully I come across a little more put together than that.
I regularly speak around the world and in the media on technology issues. I’ve been quoted in Wired, Popular Science, Consumer Reports, and have appeared on MSNBC, CNN, and more.
I love to pull apart tech so I can understand how it works. But what really drives me is sharing that knowledge with others in a way that they understand.
…and that brings us back to this series.
It’s critical that we understand our digital world and how actions taken there have an effect in the physical world. Even the simplest technology has mountains of complexity hiding behind it.
Security and privacy are often misunderstood and pushed to the side. This show aims to make these topics more approachable.
We will publish regularly on YouTube and as a podcast, so be sure to subscribe to get notified when a new episode drops. Each one will include a number of links in the description to help you learn more and to understand the research that goes into each episode.
If you have a topic you are curious about and want to see covered or if you want to continue the discussion you can always reach out on social media or in the comments below.
Stay tuned, together we’ll assess the impact technology has on our lives.
