For a number of years, the IMA has been running a series of conferences to promote mathematics with the aim of demonstrating to both mathematicians and non-mathematicians the many uses of modern mathematics. Following last summer’s very successful IMA Mathematics 2020 series collaboration with the Newton Gateway to Mathematics ran two events in May 2021.
At this event Nick Higham (University of Manchester and Winner of the IMA Gold Medal Prize 2021) provided his Gold Medal Talk on 'Communicating Applied Mathematics in 2021.'
Institute Gold Medals are awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to mathematics and its applications over a period of years, with nominations being considered every two years.
Abstract:
Writing papers for journals is the main way in which mathematics researchers communicate their work. Articles for magazines, such as Mathematics Today, and blog posts, provide a vehicle for more expository presentations of research. These outlets can reach a wider audience, including practitioners who do not keep up with the research literature, and rapid feedback can be obtained. I will discuss my experience of writing articles and blog posts, focusing on several examples of research that has resonated with a wider audience. I will also discuss the “What Is” series of blog posts about topics in numerical analysis and related areas that I have been writing weekly for over a year. Finally, I touch on an important aspect of workflow: how to navigate the many file formats required by different publication platforms (docx, html, md, tex, txt, etc.).
