I would have stayed behind and not overtake since it's illegal to cross the white line. Doesn't matter whether you can see far down the road and was safe to overtake, it's illegal.

For some reason Scotlaaa 1984 the troll said "it's not illegal to cross the white line" on a thread which a cyclist claimed they would cross the white line to let a hgv undertake them, which is also illegal. He doesn't really understand how the road works...
