Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!

1. Sock question! I have some hand spun yarn that I’d love to use in something like your fun ooey gooey sock pattern, but it is not spun from Superwash fiber. I’ve had some socks I made from hand spun yarn in the past that has worn a hole in the heel. Is it even worth investing time in knitting socks made from NSW yarn? Or do you recommend only using SW yarn/wool for knitting socks? I want to keep making socks, but I want them to last for as long as possible.

Have you worn through hand knit socks? How long do your pairs last? Thank you!!!

2. What does a knitter mean when they describe a yarn as "wooly wool"? I was rewatching an older episode (227 to be precise) where you were describing a Harrisville yarn as wooly wool. I realized I don't really know what that means! Can you enlighten me? Is it fiber content? How it's spun? How it feels?

3. I've never knitted a cardigan, only pullover sweaters. I'm 6' tall with a long torso, so I always have to add multiple inches to the length of my sweaters. How do you go about adding additional button holes? Math is not my friend.

4. Hi Andrea! I love your new Ooey Gooey sock pattern and would love to participate in the KAL, however, I have never knit a pair of socks before. Do you think this pattern would be a manageable first pair? For context, I have been knitting for 5 years and have made a lot of different garments (sweaters, shawls) but am not as advanced with colorwork. If it would be safer to start with bear paw socks or drk everyday socks, I can do that and save ooey gooey for another time!

5. Hi, Andrea! I have a question about gauge. How do you decide the “right” gauge for a project? I always hear people say things like choose a gauge or fabric you like. Or compare different swatches and say they like this one better. I feel like I can’t really tell a difference or maybe I just don’t know what I’m looking for. It’s easier to tell if the fabric is too stiff or loose. But what would you be looking for when starting a new project?

Today I am wearing the Tessellated Cardigan:
