Here's a virtual movie of a recital of the poem "If I Should Ever by Chance" by Edward Thomas being recited by actor,broadcaster and writer Victor Clinton-Baddeley aka V.C. Clinton-Baddeley who was well known for his radio broadcasts of poetry readings he was also the owner manager of "Jupiter Records a prolific producer and issuer of poetry on records many of which I have in my collection. The animation has been made using a rare photograph of him from a rather faded newspaper photo probably taken towards the end of his life in the late 1960's. V.C. Clinton-Baddeley (1900 - 1970) Victor Vaughn Reynolds Geraint Clinton Clinton-Baddeley had a varied life. He received an MA at Cambridge. Following this, he was an editor for the Encyclopedia Britannica, an actor, an author of original plays, adaptations, operettas, and radio scripts, and the owner-manager of Jupiter Records which featured recordings of poetry.Book cover: Death's Bright Dart It was only in the last four years of his life that he started writing detective fiction. His series detective was Dr. R. V. Davie who was an English professor at Cambridge University. The first book in the series was Death's Bright Dart which was published in 1967. The sound recording comes from a beautiful and rare collection of 78rpm records produced by Victor.C. Clinton-Baddeley under the label name of "The London Library of Recorded English" which was also known as Jupiter Records in later re-issues on vinyl.
"If I Should Ever by Chance" is a poem about what Thomas would like to be able to do as a father. Although not considered poor, Thomas would like to be able to give his oldest daughter as much as he can physically can, and all the happiness to her. This poem shows the love Thomas had for his daughter.
Philip Edward Thomas (3 March 1878 – 9 April 1917) was an Anglo-Welsh poet, essayist, and novelist. He is commonly considered a war poet, although few of his poems deal directly with his war experiences, and his career in poetry only came after he had already been a successful writer and literary critic. In 1915, he enlisted in the British Army to fight in the First World War and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917, soon after he arrived in France.
