stevie boebi | If disabled people spoke like abled people PART 5 @stevie | Uploaded December 2023 | Updated October 2024, 18 hours ago.
Don’t get me wrong, I think abled people are SO BRAVE for living a life without fun and cool mobility aides like the rest of us, but I could never. I think I’d rather unalive than have to live like that! I’m just so grateful I’m not like them. /s
The abelist structure in the real world reinforces the idea that abled people are superior to disabled people, and assumes that disabled people can’t achieve goals, have opportunities, or enjoy things in life in the same ways that abled people can. So if we reversed it, in this opposite world would it be sad when people are confined to their legs and don’t get to use mobility aides? Would it inspire gratitude?
The worst part about it is that it’s supposed to be a compliment! It’s not a compliment for you to say you’d rather die than be disabled. It’s condescending and rude at best and triggering self harm ideation at worst.
