That January 6, 1994 smash of a baton on Nancy Kerrigan's knee kept her out of the National Skating Championships and on the front page for months. It meant she couldn't qualify for the Winter Olympics in February. The whispers began immediately that people close to rival Tonya Harding were involved.
“I can't believe it. I mean why does someone want to discredit me? I just don't understand.”
"Were you shocked when you heard some of these things?"
“It's ludicrous. It's totally ludicrous.”
But it wasn't. Her husband Jeff Gillooly and bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt were involved, and she knew it. She admitted it just days later.
“I had no prior knowledge of the planned assault on Nancy Kerrigan I am responsible, however, for failing to report things I learned about the assault when I returned home from Nationals.”
Gone with Harding's Olympic dream: her marriage, her membership in the U.S. Skating Association, and a $100,000 fine imposed for the part she played in hindering the investigation of the attack.
Her former husband, Jeff Gillooly, was given two years in jail. 18-month sentences were handed to Tanya's bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt, hit man Shane Stant, and the getaway car driver, Derrick Smith.
Shawn Eckhardt changed his name to Brian Sean Griffth. He died in 2007 at age 40 of "natural causes."

For Prince Charles, the year gets off with a bang Down Under as an assailant firing a starters pistol merely startles the heir to the British throne. Meanwhile his estranged wife Diana is fending off her own assailants who are wielding cameras. In july Charles admits

In October the release of the kiss-and-tell book ‘A Princess in Love’ details Dianas own alleged infidelities with Army Major James Hewitt.

It reads like a sort of pulp love story. Its probably reached its lower depths with this book.
But two more books in November proved that assumption premature. In ‘The Prince of Wales: An Intimate Portrait,’ Charles says his father Prince Philip forced him to marry the young Diana, and in ‘Diana: Her New Life,’ the princess allegedly cast herself as the biggest prostitute in the world for staying in the failed marriage. At years end there
are rumors of an impending divorce and speculation that the son may finally be setting on the British monarchy.

U.S.-Russian relations were chilled early in the year when the CIA announced one of its top agents was spying for the Soviet Union, and then Russia. Aldrich Ames and his wife Rosario were arrested, charged with selling secrets for 2.5 million dollars. Ames sold the names of every double agent he knew of, causing the deaths of at least a dozen. Many were executed, imprisoned, or just disappeared. We do not have an exact number. When it learned agents were killed, The CIA knew it had a traitor. But it didnt catch Ames for 9 years, even though he acted wrecklessly, paying half a million dollars in cash for
a new house, and buying a Jaguar. Ames was sentenced to life in prison, but was able to cut a deal to reduce his wifes sentence. Asked why he did what he did, Ames said
money was his main motivation. CIA Director James Woolsey was much criticized for only reprimanding, not firing or demoting the managers who failed to take note of Ames suspicious ways. On December 27th, he resigned under fire.
