For Prince Charles, the year gets off with a bang Down Under as an assailant firing a starters pistol merely startles the heir to the British throne. Meanwhile his estranged wife Diana is fending off her own assailants who are wielding cameras. In july Charles admits
to adultery in an extraordinary televised interview. Surprisingly he earns points for candor.
I thought he came over very very well and it was a man of substance.

In October the release of the kiss-and-tell book ‘A Princess in Love’ details Dianas own alleged infidelities with Army Major James Hewitt.
“Diana stood up and, without saying a word, stretched out her hand and slowly led James to her bedroom.”
“Later, she lay in his arms and wept.”
It reads like a sort of pulp love story. Its probably reached its lower depths with this book.
But two more books in November proved that assumption premature. In ‘The Prince of Wales: An Intimate Portrait,’ Charles says his father Prince Philip forced him to marry the young Diana, and in ‘Diana: Her New Life,’ the princess allegedly cast herself as the biggest prostitute in the world for staying in the failed marriage. At years end there
are rumors of an impending divorce and speculation that the son may finally be setting on the British monarchy.

Susan Smith claimed that a black carjacker had run off with her car, with her two children, Michael and Alex, strapped in the back seat. After a nationwide manhunt, Smith confessed to rolling the car into a lake, killing the boys.

U.S.-Russian relations were chilled early in the year when the CIA announced one of its top agents was spying for the Soviet Union, and then Russia. Aldrich Ames and his wife Rosario were arrested, charged with selling secrets for 2.5 million dollars. Ames sold the names of every double agent he knew of, causing the deaths of at least a dozen. Many were executed, imprisoned, or just disappeared. We do not have an exact number. When it learned agents were killed, The CIA knew it had a traitor. But it didnt catch Ames for 9 years, even though he acted wrecklessly, paying half a million dollars in cash for
a new house, and buying a Jaguar. Ames was sentenced to life in prison, but was able to cut a deal to reduce his wifes sentence. Asked why he did what he did, Ames said
money was his main motivation. CIA Director James Woolsey was much criticized for only reprimanding, not firing or demoting the managers who failed to take note of Ames suspicious ways. On December 27th, he resigned under fire.

Chester Szuber, Heart Transplant Recipient: “I feel absolutely fantastic. Emotionally, I have problems, and I think that only from the standpoint of that weve lost Patti...”
Its a dramatic story of life from death. Chester Szuber had heart disease most of his life. When he became a candidate for a transplant four years ago, his daughter, Patti, became an organ donor.
In August, the 22-year-old woman was killed in a car accident. Chester’s family helped convince him Patti would have wanted him to receive her heart. What may be the first operation of its kind was performed four days after the accident.
I think its going to make me stronger because not only do I have to consider my own health Im taking care of Patti at the same time.
