The Steam Deck OLED just received a significant overnight price increase, and what it signals about the Steam Machine is the bigger story.
A personal take on today's news and what it means for PC gaming hardware in 2026.
The Steam Deck OLED 512GB jumped from $549 to $789 and the 1TB from $649 to $949 overnight, with Valve citing rising memory and storage costs driven by AI infrastructure demand stripping DRAM and NAND flash from the consumer market. The LCD model has been discontinued entirely, removing the last affordable entry point from the lineup. Since its original launch price of $399 in 2022, the cheapest way to buy a new Steam Deck today is $789, nearly double the original price on hardware with unchanged performance.
The Steam Machine, announced in November 2025 and originally targeting an early 2026 release, shares the same category of components that just drove the Steam Deck increase. Pre-crisis speculation had the Steam Machine landing around $700 to $800. Based on what we are seeing today, those estimates look increasingly out of date. The release timeline has already slipped from early 2026 to first half 2026 to simply coming soon, and no official price has ever been announced.
This video also covers a change of personal plans, moving away from waiting for the Steam Machine and toward a dedicated custom gaming PC build instead, funded by selling the PS5 Pro after GTA 6.
