I decided to upload something which was a lot more cheerful than my last video. I've had this video idea for a couple of months now, but only recently ripped my DVD of Mary Poppins.
I absolutely LOVE Mary & Bert together. A lot of people seem to think that Bert is in love with Mary, but she doesn't return his feelings. This is because of the song "Jolly Holiday", in which Mary sings "You'd never think of pressing your advantage, for bearance is the hallmark of your creed. A lady needn't fear when you are near; your sweet gentility is crystal clear," which many assume is Mary's way of basically friend-zoning Bert.
However, I, personally, interpret that part of the song totally differently. I actually think it's Mary's way of admitting that she does love Bert, but is grateful that Bert doesn't pressure her to act on her feelings. After all, Mary has a duty to bring happiness to neglected children, presumably across the country, and therefore can't begin a normal relationship with Bert. Rather than begin a long-distance relationship, I think the two have this sort of unspoken agreement that their relationship will remain strictly platonic to save heartache for both of them. After all, Mary could be gone from Bert's life for months at a time. So, I have to disagree with other people's interpretations of this song. In fact, I kind of think the 'friend-zone' theory about the song suggests that Mary knows how Bert feels but is stringing him along, and I don't think Mary is that kind of person.
I used to really, really hate this movie as a child; I thought it was too sugary-sweet, too over-the-top and too long. But now I'm older, I realise the beauty and message of this movie and it's honestly probably my absolute favourite movie. I can't help but feel so proud that this movie won so many awards, including the Best Actress Oscar for Julie Andrews, but I kind of wish Dick Van Dyke had won the Best Actor award, or at the very least been nominated for it! Heck, I just wish Bert got more praise in general; after all, it was Bert, really, that made Mr. Banks realise where his priorities were. Plus, some of the glances and looks that Bert gives Mary when she's not even looking are just so cute and romantic. Julie & Dick had such amazing chemistry. They make Mary & Bert such a believable and adorable couple.
I have two more song ideas for this couple (both by Owl City xD), but honestly, I'd love to work with them again & again so song suggestions are more than welcome. :)
