This is another song in a series I’m writing about the places that raised me.
A memory about my first day of school, not knowing the rules, and realizing for the first time there were rooms made just to learn in.
Love to you,
Emery
Lyrics:
i walked in a small bright room
lots of kids in lines sittin there
little tables stuck to little chairs
a girl said somethin bout flip flops
and messy hair
an old lady walked toward me
pointed her pencil, looked angry
sit there, she said
pointin to a seat in the back
where’s your backpack
can you read
can you write
we’ll have to see how you do
3rd grade might be better for you
she looked mean n mad
and stomped away
all the kids whispered
n looked my way
she came back fast
with pencil n paper
tapped her pencil
on the table
write your name
in cursive, she frowned
i wrote my name, looked at her, set my pencil down
okay
write me a full sentence too
i’m in a room
writin a sentence for you
she looked at me straight
i was nine
i’d never been to school
didn’t know miss muller’s rules
didn’t know they made rooms just to learn in
i watched n listened
i wanted to know
i wanted to learn
in line for lunch with little trays
old ladies handin food our way
the lunches were yummy
i ate my pizza hungry
chocolate milk i’d never had
not gonna tell mom
she’d be mad
p.e. was my favorite part
mr chaz watched me stop n start
my flip flops broke that first day
but i kept runnin anyway
he laughed n called me
to come his way
try these, he said
handin me a pair of tennis shoes
they fit n felt soft n new
then back to class to sit n listen more
my teacher talkin n walkin
from her desk to the door
writin on a green wall
droppin chalk on the floor
a room made just to learn
an hour outside, playin games n takin turns
music, art, math n spellin
miss muller walkin round yellin
kids makin funny faces, playin paper fortune tellin
a room made just to learn in
a room made just to learn in
miss muller watched me close
but never said another word to me
a room made just to learn
an hour outside, playin games n takin turns
music, art, math n spellin
miss muller walkin round yellin
kids makin funny faces, playin paper fortune tellin
didn’t know they made rooms just to learn in
i wanted to know
i wanted to learn
