This is an educational Vocal Coach analysis of Gorillaz and their 2001 hit Clint Eastwood. Released at a time when pop music was heavily polished and perfected, this track did the opposite: loose tuning, eerie production, off-kilter timing and vocals that feel almost detached. After analysing “Feel Good Inc.” recently, I had to dive in.
Damon Albarn (voice of 2-D) famously admitted the beat was built around the famous ‘Rock 1’ preset from a Suzuki Omnichord. It creates an unsettling atmosphere through strange stereo panning, ghostly western-inspired vocals, Murdoc’s sinister laugh and drums that deliberately feel out of sync. Then Del the Funky Homosapien’s rap, flips everything.
Most importantly, the chorus is noticeably out of tune and you have to listen to understand why that is PERFECT. Those notes of apathy, melancholy and emotional weight that perfect tuning would destroy. “Clint Eastwood” shouldn’t work on paper, but that tension between chaos and genius is exactly what made it a masterpiece.
