This is an educational Vocal Coach analysis of “Song 2” by Blur, from their self-titled 1997 album. A hit that had monumental impact on the Brit-Pop band, we break down why it’s had longevity despite being written as a “joke” for their label. Graham Coxon’s “noisy and chaotic” shock for Parlophone records unexpectedly became a defining anthem of 90s alternative rock. The famous “Woo-hoo” hook, performed by Damon Albarn who also fronted Gorillaz, isn’t a shout but a controlled, head-voice burst.

We break down how vocal placement, contrast between soft verses and explosive choruses, subtle phrasing, nasality and dynamics that amplify the impact. The simplicity of the lyrics and near-improvised delivery didn’t stop it having powerful, stadium-sized impact. Could it have been created as a grunge parody? Or even inspired by some of Noel Gallagher’s Oasis vocals?

Watch this video to learn how “Song 2” harnesses vocal contrast and simplicity to create one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable anthems of all time.
