In this video, I unbox and test the Waveshare 13.3" Spectra 6 color e-paper display driven by an ESP32-S3 — the biggest color e-ink panel I've worked with so far.

Unlike small e-paper displays you read up close, this one is big enough to read from across the room, which completely changes what you can build with it. I go through what's in the box, the hardware (ESP32-S3, WiFi/Bluetooth, SD card slot, onboard mics and audio codec), how the Spectra 6 color technology actually works, and then put it to the real test: loading images and timing the refresh speed.
Spoiler: paintings look stunning. Photos... not so much. I break down exactly why, and what that means for anyone thinking about building with this panel.
What I cover:
Unboxing the driver board, panel, and speaker
ESP32-S3 specs and why the onboard mics are a surprise bonus
How Spectra 6 e-ink color actually works (and its real limitations)
Programming it with Arduino IDE
Real-time refresh speed test
Why paintings dither beautifully but photos struggle
Is the $260 price tag worth it?
