These are European and North American patterns! I tested five Nordic-style friction winter tires plus two reference sets (a studded tyre and a Central European winter tire) across 21 tests in 6 categories: snow, ice, wet, dry, comfort/noise, and rolling resistance. If you drive in regions with frequent snow and ice, this is the group test you need.

Key Findings
β’ Overall winner - Continental VikingContact 8: Extremely consistent; strongest overall across snow and ice, quietest on test, and lowest rolling resistance.
β’ Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 3: Excellent snow and ice performance with class-leading aquaplaning resistance and top comfort.
β’ Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5: In a league of its own in the wet (and very strong in the dry), but compromised on smooth-ice traction/braking.
β’ Michelin X-Ice Snow: Best on smooth ice (braking & traction) and very good in snow, but weakest in wet and dry; moderate RR.
β’ Marshal iZen KW31: Acceptable in snow, but generally off the pace in wet and ice with high rolling resistance.
β’ Studded vs friction: The studded Hakkapeliitta 10 dominates on smooth ice (braking/traction), but on rough ice the best friction tyres can be easier to drive.
β’ Central European winter (TS 870): Mid-pack in snow vs the Nordic tyres, but on another level in wet and dry.

![Are Modern Runflat Tires Finally Good? Normal, RFT and SEAL Tires Compared!
Runflat [RFT] tires have a bad reputation for low levels of comfort, being noisy, and poor grip especially in the wet. But how much of this is down to the fact the tire is a run flat tyre, and how much of it is down to it just being a bad tire?
To find out Im testing a normal regular car tire against a fourth generation runflat tire with exactly the same compound and tread pattern. This means the the only difference is that the runflat tire has the extra support in the sidewall.
Runflat tires are called different things by various manufacturers:
Hankook: Hankook Runflat System - HRS
Goodyear / Dunlop: RunOnFlat - RoF
Michelin: Zero Pressure - ZP
Bridgestone: DriveGuard
Continental: Self Sealing Reifen - SSR
Pirelli: Run Flat - R F
To make things even more interesting, Ive included a sealant tire, which is a normal tire with a complicated sealant material bonded to the inside which seals any small punctures the tire might get in the tread pattern.
As always Im testing the dry and wet grip of the three types of tires, and perhaps even more importantly, doing extensive noise and comfort testing to see if a modern run flat tyre is now more comfortable than the earlier versions.
I also test whether a sealant tire really can be punctured multiple times, and I test whether you really can run on a runflat tire for 80 kms at 80 km/h.
