In this video I show the design, construction, and maiden flight of an experimental RC Vulcan-style delta aircraft powered by two ultra-cheap 30 mm EDF (Electric Ducted Fan) units costing less than β¬20 for the pair.
I began by testing the EDFs, which each produce around 100 g of thrust at approximately 5.2 A. After a previous propeller-powered Vulcan ended in an immediate crash, the airframe is repurposed as a test bed for these EDFs. Custom thrust tubes are fabricated from acetate sheet with 3D printed supports, and the motors are positioned to allow differential thrust for yaw control.
The electronics include dual ESCs, an ELRS ER4 receiver, HobbyEagle A3 Mini gyro, FlySky PA01 transmitter, battery telemetry, and SBUS/PWM channel mapping. I show how the receiver can simultaneously provide SBUS and PWM outputs, allowing additional servo channels while using the gyro.
After balancing the aircraft without adding ballast, the maiden flight takes place. Despite looking rough and being entirely experimental, the model flies surprisingly well. Some oscillation from excessive gyro gain is observed, but the aircraft remains controllable and lands largely intact. The conclusion is that the inexpensive EDFs perform far better than expected and the design has genuine potential with further tuning.
