Formlabs just launched Form Now, their new print-on-demand service that prints your models in resin or SLS nylon and ships them straight to your door. I put it to the test by ordering a mix of their sample parts and my own designs, focusing on nylon SLS prints since I don't have access to an SLS printer at home. In this video I walk through the entire experience: uploading models, picking materials, getting instant quotes, and unboxing the results. My order ran $227 with shipping and tax, and the parts showed up in 11 days. I hit a couple of snags along the way, including a missing part and some tolerance issues on parts I designed for FDM, and I cover how Formlabs handled it. If you're curious whether a U.S.-based print service is worth it for one-off parts or production runs, this is my honest take as a first-time customer.
Since I tried out the service at launch in early April, they've made a number of improvements. According to the Form Now marketing manager:
1. Part Pricing: we’ve made some factory optimizations and pricing improvements to pass on the savings to our customers
2. Shipping Pricing: Shipping calculations are now dynamicly calculated, and are no longer a $20 flat-rate shipping. This means smaller orders can be a lot cheaper to ship now than before.
3. Individual Packing: Parts are now individually wrapped and labeled to prevent damage during shipping.
I'm glad to see Form Now continue to evolve, and we'll see if I have the opportunity to test them out again in the future.
