I put a piece of wood under the microscope. Despite being completely dry at first, the sample revealed a surprising range of microscopic life: nematodes, fungal spores, protozoa, bacteria, and even tardigrades (Water Bears). In this video, I show how to prepare such a specimen, what to look for, and how these organisms survive dryness through cysts or endospores.
