I see Black people in Mexico! 👀🇲🇽 But this conversation is about more than simply seeing people who look like us. It’s about finding and intentionally building Black community while living abroad.
After my recent livestream discussing the experiences of Black people living in Lake Chapala and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, I wanted to continue the conversation by sharing what community has looked like in my life here in Mexico.
For me, Black community in Mexico means:
🔴 We gather to CELEBRATE — birthdays, accomplishments, holidays and life milestones.
🔴 We gather to PRAY — creating space for faith, fellowship and supporting one another spiritually.
🔴 We gather to SUPPORT — sharing resources, helping newcomers, checking on one another and navigating life abroad together.
🔴 We gather to PLAY — dinners, coffee chats, Mexican Soul Train, outings, laughter and simply enjoying this season of life.
One thing I’ve learned from living abroad is that community isn’t necessarily something you find waiting for you. Sometimes it’s something you intentionally create.
If you’re a Black woman over 50 considering retiring, relocating or living in Mexico, don’t only ask, “Are there Black people there?”
Consider asking:
“Can I build the kind of community I need to thrive there?”
Because finding your people can be just as important as finding your place. 💛
