March 22 was World Water Day and we gathered at Malecón de Ajijic to sing, pray and dance for the lake’s healing and for abundant rainfall this year..
In honor of the liquid that gives us life, people gathered at Malecón de Ajijic to sing, dance, and pray for Mexico’s largest inland body of water, Lake Chapala.
Batucada, is a popular Afro-Brazilian street dance that is accompanied by percussion instruments. The Artistic and Pacific group met at the Laguna Plaza in Ajijic and marched to the malecón where the welcome circle and alter were waiting to receive them and their messages to the lake. Fruits, seeds and flowers were placed on the alter.
Part of the ceremony included the Mexican tradition of greeting the directions of the East, West, North and South. They also prayed for Mother Earth, the Universe, and honored the feminine spirit.
This was an important event as I have witnessed with my own eyes of the truth of the reports saying that our waters are receding.
Connecting with the spirit and uniting in songs and the dance for this year’s rain is an experience hold dear to my heart and I will always remember.
