I recorded this in honor of Tom Chopelas, director of the East Coast Jazz Drum & Bugle Corps during the seven years I marched there, from 1994 to 2000, or ages 14 to 20.
Tom and his wife, Linda, somehow found a way to keep our corps going despite the massive financial challenges. Tom really, really put his heart into ECJ: running a bingo hall as our primary fundraiser, serving as one of our drivers, and doing countless other jobs behind the scenes, all to give so many of us a place to practice our wild musical sport.
I hadn’t seen Tom since 2000, but recently, a buddy I marched with wrote to let me know that he had passed away.
I wanted to find a way to thank Tom and his family, and also to send some love to my brothers and sisters from ECJ.
We played “La Suerte de los Tontos,” from Stan Kenton’s “Cuban Fire!”, as part of our show in 1996, and I remember Tom liking it a lot.
Back then, I used to study all our brass arrangements, along with many of the original scores for the music we played, including this piece. I recently found an arrangement I’d made (and forgotten about) while rediscovering some MIDI files of things I’d done back in the ’90s.
This song felt like the perfect tribute to Tom on the 30th anniversary of our corps performing it, so I brought the arrangement back to life in his honor. It’s full of energy and that drum corps spirit, just like Tom.
To get started, I even put on my old drum corps rehearsal suit: just a pair of shorts and this very baseball cap, my faithful, well-faded companion from all those years ago.

Tom y su esposa, Linda, siempre encontraban la manera de mantener vivo nuestro corps a pesar de las enormes dificultades económicas. Tom realmente puso todo su corazón en ECJ: gestionaba el bingo, nuestra principal fuente de financiación; era uno de nuestros conductores; y desempeñaba innumerables tareas más entre bastidores. Todo para ofrecernos a tantos de nosotros un lugar donde practicar nuestro disparatado deporte musical.
No había visto a Tom desde el año 2000, pero hace poco un compañero con quien marché me escribió para contarme que había fallecido.
Quería encontrar una forma de dar las gracias a Tom y a su familia, y también de mandarles mucho cariño a mis hermanos y hermanas de ECJ.
Tocamos “La Suerte de los Tontos”, de “Cuban Fire!” de Stan Kenton, como parte de nuestro espectáculo de 1996, y recuerdo que a Tom le gustaba mucho.
Por aquel entonces estudiaba todos nuestros arreglos para metales, además de muchas de las partituras originales de la música que tocábamos, incluida esta pieza. Hace poco, mientras redescubría algunos archivos MIDI de cosas que había hecho en los años 90, encontré un arreglo que yo mismo había escrito (y olvidado).
Este tema me pareció el homenaje perfecto para Tom al cumplirse 30 años desde que nuestro corps lo interpretó, así que devolví el arreglo a la vida en su honor. Está lleno de energía y del espíritu del drum corps, igual que Tom.
Para empezar, incluso me puse mi antiguo “uniforme” de ensayo de drum corps: unos pantalones cortos y esta misma gorra de béisbol, mi fiel y desteñida compañera de aquellos años.
