Rather than a simple echo, I always love to explore delays as a way of imperfectly folding and layering time -- collecting moments from the past, layering them together in the wrong order, faster or slower than they originally occurred, adding distortions and wobbles into the feedback loop, etc...
Here I'm using the @vongonelectronics Polyphrase stereo echo and infinite looping pedal with my trumpet, along with a simple patch in MaxMSP to send out random CC's to control delay time with the onset of each new note on the trumpet.
I feel like working in this way allows you to improvise with the past in a really interesting way, and to build surprising musical structures out of chance collisions between past / present / future.
These thoughts and explorations have been greatly inspired by early experiments in tape looping, Time Lag Accumulation (Terry Riley), and the work of Robert Fripp (Frippertronics) and Brian Eno. ❤️
