Everyone loves Jeremiah 29:11. Who wouldn't love a promise from God that He will give you peace, future, and a hope?
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11)
But is this a verse that should adorn our computer wallpaper and hang on our mirrors? The answer is...sure, if you actually know what it is saying.
Context is crucial, as always. God is prophesying to Israel during the 70-year Babylonian captivity that He will bring them back to their land. He had made eternal promises to Israel and would keep them. Read the whole chapter and you'll get it.
We can learn three things from this passage:
1. It shows us something about God—He loves His people.
2. God keeps His promises—He promised Abraham a land, descendants, and a blessing. He also promised to bring Israel out of the captivity, and He did.
3. It shows that God does not abandon His people. This was specifically for Israel, but we also have promises. Read the book of Revelation.
I posted this video primarily to help us correctly understand the Bible. Although we love a verse, we need to make sure we understand it in its original context.
