warning: long description ahead. i'm going to go more in depth with this video than i have in the past. this video has been in the works ever since 2017, when i first started listening to this band. however, i took a long break from it, and only recently this summer came back to it and decided to finish it. i'm very glad that i managed to push through to the end, because in doing so i've created what i think is one of the most powerful and personal videos i've ever made.
honestly, i'm not quite sure how to articulate my thought process in making this video, so i guess i should just say that this song is one of my favorites and is very personal to me. the video, therefore, is personal as well. i'm going to explain some of it below.
there's a lot of different topics i have covered in this video. most of the TLK segments, showing the differences between simba and kiara, are really meant to show different sides of the same person. it's not a gender thing, honestly. i thought it might be for a while but i'm starting to realize that i'm both kiara and simba. kiara represents the person i am now - she has a lot of hopes for the future, but she's also afraid, and has a lot of insecurities. simba is the person i want to become - strong, proud, and finally comfortable in my own skin. it doesn't mean that to me, kiara is flawed and simba is perfect - simply that i need to make peace inside of myself. i'd say that the TLK segments are the most important to me because of that.
there is also a lot of use of LATT 2, mostly showing the relationship between angel and scamp; as well as how angel is affected by buster's treatment of her. buster, in a way, is angel's abuser - he has kicked her down repeatedly and brought her down to her core, and now she's been "rewired". she no longer believes she is worth anything. scamp has also been abused by buster, in more of a physical way. in order to become one of the junkyard dogs and gain buster's respect, scamp has to "tear the buildings down" and destroy his relationship with his father, therefore becoming someone he isn't. this makes him uncomfortable, and is what makes him want to break free of buster's grasp and take angel with him.
these are the only two parts of the video i want to go seriously in depth with. there are other stories told within the video - kenai struggling with his human and bear side, and what he has done to koda; patch projecting idol worship onto thunderbolt to escape from his life; oliver giving up his place in dodger's gang for a home with jenny; and tramp trying to coax lady out of her protected life into the real world, where she can truly experience freedom. however, these are mostly self explanatory, and i don't feel the need to go into them as much.
i hope you all don't think less of this video because i added no coloring. this may be a raw video, due to its lack of effects and focus on clip choice and flow, but i don't want that to be what is taken away from it; i hope that the video's meaning is what you all take from it. last time i did a full video ("the sea is a good place to think of the future"), i started out without a coloring, but then later on added one because i felt that the coloring added to the video aesthetically. this time i went without one because this song has never called one to mind for me; i've simply always had ideas for certain clips to be placed with certain lyrics.
anyway, this is probably where i should stop the rambly description, as i'm sure most people have gotten bored or stopped reading by now. i hope that you all enjoyed and took something away from this video. mostly, i hope that it has an emotional impact, as that is one of the most important things i aim to do with my videos. i hope that i respectfully conveyed topics such as mental abuse, self hatred, depression, loss, and individuality through the use of animated animals and made a video that is truly worth looking back on with fondness. this is one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands and it's the start of an incredible album. the hotelier are some of the most prominent songwriters in the modern rock scene, and i'm so glad that i got to edit to one of their most powerful songs.
