I've been riding on the street for 17 years and off-road for a little over two. I've gotten to the point where I can ride forest service roads by myself and feel fine about it, and that is exactly the problem. Stay on the stuff you're comfortable on and you stay exactly that good forever.
So I called @RodneySargent a professional stunt rider, and asked him to take me somewhere I'd never pick on my own. He used the first road of the day to decide how hard the rest of it was going to be. By the end he rated the last climb a 5. I'm a 2.
This is the whole day on the Tenere 700 in North Georgia. The hill climb I had to talk myself into, the throttle cramp that taught me I'd been using my hands wrong off-road for two years, the mud, the downed tree that probably saved me, and a rocky uphill where stopping was not an option.
