I’m not an impulsive guy, especially when it comes to money. I don’t typically make crazy financial decisions, but about four months ago, I made what might be the most ridiculous—and fun—impulse purchase of my life. My wife was away on a girls’ trip; I had some time to kill, and after doing a little shopping, I decided to stop by a new Porsche dealership near my house. My BMW lease was almost up; I was tired of BMWs, and honestly, I didn’t even consider myself much of a car guy anymore. I figured I’d just look around -- famous last words.
I walked downstairs into this absolutely insane showroom that looked like the freaking Batcave, and there it was—a Porsche 911 in the perfect color. Porsche has been my dream car since I was about eight years old, so when the salesman asked if I wanted to take it for a test drive, obviously I said yes. I drove it around once, came back, and immediately asked if I could drive it again. That was pretty much it. I was hooked. When we got back and he asked if I wanted to build one, something completely out of character happened. I basically said, “Screw it. Let’s do it.” I built my dream Porsche, put down the deposit, and then spent the next four and a half months obsessively tracking its progress through the app.
And now, it’s finally here! I went back to Hennessy Porsche Atlanta Northwest with my wife to pick it up, and seeing it for the first time was unbelievable. I turned 50, and I figured, life is short—happy freaking birthday to me! The car turned out even better than I imagined. I went with a gray exterior, black rims, tinted windows, black leather interior, and slate gray stitching to match the exterior. I also loaded up my base Carrera 911 with options and added PPF to help keep it looking incredible. I don’t need a GT3 or some insane track monster—I normally drive like an old lady! I wanted the classic Porsche lines, plenty of speed, and something I could actually enjoy driving for a long time. For me, this car is perfect.
Driving it home was incredible. The handling, the feel, the experience—it brought me right back to being that eight-year-old kid who fell in love with the Porsche 911. Is it practical? Nope. Was it impulsive? Absolutely. Is it probably the most ridiculous amount of money I’ve ever spent on something I didn’t need? Yep. But damn, it makes me happy. Sometimes you work hard, you turn 50, you realize life is freaking short, and you allow yourself to do something completely ridiculous just because it brings you joy. I plan to keep this car for a long time, drive the hell out of it, and enjoy every second.
