It's time to talk about failure. The inevitable part of any type of making. But it doesn't have to be the terrifying thing keeping you from new experiences! The fear of failure is why I DON'T do "dream projects" anymore. Not that I'm scared of messing them up, but because the only way to be successful is emotional perfection. Where it turns out how you always imagined and the first time you wear it everything goes smoothly. But after years and years I've found that rarely is it enough. Instead of celebrating all of the achievements and enjoying the experience I'm focused on the mistakes. I'm focused on the fact that it doesn't feel good enough, that I don't feel good enough. So I re-evaluated my goals as a maker.
Instead of focusing on the finished product, I focus on the process and the function. What do I need this garment to do? Even if things go sideways, I may still learn the technique I wanted to. I may have learned something unexpected! It may do well enough to function for its intended purpose of one night in a dark ballroom or one photoshoot where no one will see the back! I began to realized I gain SO MUCH every time I make something new, regardless of its final form. Not just in making knowledge, but in learning how to function in life and work.
With that in mind, it's time to look forward to some 2022 projects and plans! My big event for the year is a vintage themed cruise where I'm going to need a lot of clothes to make it all the way across the Atlantic and back. I'm certainly not leaving off shoemaking either, as I've been particularly intrigued by the 1850s, 1890s, and 1910s as of late. It doesn't help that my antiques collection keeps growing and tempting me every which way. And, of course, at least one large project planned for another historically accurate cosplay where I'm venturing into new territory of the 16th or early 17th centuries.
